Board of Education Standing Committees
Committee on Strengthening Early Childhood Education Programs
This committee recommends guidelines for school divisions in developing, selecting and evaluating preschool curricula and collaborates with school divisions, community colleges and higher education to assess the current and future need for preschool teachers and qualified teacher assistants.

Committee on Literacy
This committee recommends strategies for raising the level of literacy of children, adolescents and adults to ensure that students are reading on grade level by the third grade and that literacy is sustain among students as they move from elementary school to middle school and high school.

Committee on School and Division Accountability
This committee studies chronically low-performing schools and school divisions and makes recommendations on increasing accountability for effective instruction and achievement.

Committee on the Standards of Quality
This committee makes recommendations to the full board on revising the Standards of Quality. The Constitution of Virginia requires the Board of Education to determine and prescribe standards of quality for the public schools of Virginia, subject to revision only by the General Assembly.

Committee on Graduation and Dropout Rates
This committee examines policies and data related to middle-to-high school transition, ninth-grade retention, truancy and dropout and graduation rates. It also identifies best practices to reduce ninth-grade retention and increase the percentage of students who complete high school by earning a diploma.

Advisory Committees
The primary purpose of the Board of Education’s advisory committees is to advise, assist, and provide support and advocacy for quality education. Advisory committees work to advise the Board of Education on policies, procedures, and methods, which help strengthen educational programs.
Advisory committees are composed of members who have volunteered their time, talents, and knowledge to help strengthen educational programs. Members are appointed by the Board of Education to serve three-year terms of service. Each advisory committee develops its own program of work based on the needs of the program served. The committees meet three to four times a year and will make an annual report to the Board of Education on its recommendations for consideration and action.
